When you are at work, you can be focused on achieving great results for others. You can also be focused on work so much that it ends up consuming you. When work ends up consuming you and your way of life, you then struggle to get a healthy balance. Without a healthy balance, you will struggle to maintain a good balance between health and wellbeing. So, how can you be more proactive, and what action can you take to improve your health and wellbeing at work?
Making Self-care a Priority
To get the ball rolling, you need to start making self-care a priority in your life and in your place of work. There will always be deadlines to be met, and there will always be something you need to do (or have to do). However, remembering how important you are, and remember that self-care is a priority will help you get the right frame of mind and mindset. If you are not making self-care a priority, then you are seeing yourself as simply a number at work or a cog in a machine. You are not valuing the role you play, and you are not seeing how important you are to others around you.
Focusing on Great Communication
Often at work, communication about your work and working day can flow easily. However, when it comes to talking about feelings and emotions, you can often find that everything is so much more bottled up and restricted. This is something that, of course, needs to change. You cannot improve your health and wellbeing at work if you are not focusing on great communication. If you are not talking about what is concerning you, and you are not sharing how you are feeling, then how will others know. Most importantly, how can people start to make changes and improvements if you are not communicating with them? Being clear about what you are saying and what you want to say is going to be beneficial to striking a more healthy balance at work.
Realizing the Importance of Wellness
Within your workplace, there may have been conversations about wellness and wellbeing, but they may not have been taken any further. When you realize the importance of wellness in all roles and careers, you will refuse to settle for anything less than fantastic. When you can see and feel the importance of wellness within your place of work, you can then start to see things differently. You can then begin to focus your time and your efforts on yourself and your future needs and wants. If you are not taking charge of your wellness (as soon as you can), then you will find that nobody else within your workplace will. If you are not cautious, this is when larger problems such as overstepping boundaries can come into play.
Get Sufficient Rest and Relaxation at Home
You are not at work all of the time, and when you are not at work, you need to focus on getting enough rest and relaxation. If you are not fully winding down from your day at work or from your roles and responsibilities, then how can you expect to perform well at work, and how can you be sure that your health and wellbeing are in the best state that they can be? When it comes to getting an adequate amount of rest, it is important to switch off completely from work (where you can). Turn off your phone, don’t check your emails, and instead focus on checking out for a few hours. When you fully checkout, you then gain a fresh perspective and clarity that will allow you to focus on great health and wellbeing at work.
Reaching Out to Others
You are not alone when you are at work – even if you are working by yourself. Being open to reaching out to others and committing to do so is important. Sometimes you can find that having a good open chat about what is going on in your role or your workplace can make all of the difference. If you are not open to reaching out to others, then you are closed off to your personal growth and development. Encouraging others to open up and share with you is positive, and it is also something that you should be practicing where you can.
How mindful are you when you are at work? Are you mindful of yourself, and are you mindful of others? When you are practicing mindfulness, you will find that you are working within a workplace that is more unified and more harmonious – and of course, this is going to be beneficial to you. To practice mindfulness, you may want to give others a hug when they are struggling at work, or you may just want to give them a little bit more space and room to breathe. When you are conscious of how others are feeling and acting, and you are more aware of yourself, you will notice a difference in your health and wellbeing at work.
Look At Flexibility Within Your Role and Working Hours
What are the working hours that your role demands, and is there any flexibility? Can you move to part-time hours and take a pay cut to benefit your wellbeing and health, or can you perhaps look at working more flexibly – perhaps even occasionally working from home? If you can get more flexibility out of your work and out of your role, then you have more opportunities to practice better wellbeing and health (both inside and outside of work). If your current workplace is not as flexible as you would like, then do you have the opportunity to move to another sector or employer?
Be Open to Learning New Skills
New skills and new skillsets can help you in several ways. For example, advancing your skill set can open up more opportunities to work more flexibly – giving you a better balance. Or, new skills can help you build your confidence and embark on a new role with new responsibilities. When you are looking at improving your health and wellbeing at work, it is important to see all the facets that affect how you feel and how you act. There may be certain elements that may be affecting your wellbeing, and these may well be things that you can improve. When you are open to learning new skills and developing your skill set, you are more focused on what you need and want out of your job,m and out of your workplace.
Learn When to Say No
How often do you say yes at work – even when you do not want to? It can sometimes be easy to say no for convenience or to save face. However, this is not always beneficial to your health and wellbeing at work. When you are always saying yes, and not saying no enough, then you will find that people will push you too far. They will overstep your boundaries, and they will wear you down, and this is why setting boundaries is so important. If you struggle to be assertive and say no, then why not get some practice. Start with smaller areas of your day, to begin with, and then work on larger areas of your role. As you say no more, you will gain more confidence. Greater and improved confidence will help you make yourself a priority at work.
Focus on Getting a Sustainable Balance
Balance is the key word when you are at work, and you are improving your health and wellbeing. If you are not striking the right balance, you are then you are always facing an uphill struggle. To get the right balance, you need to take a step or two back. See what you are doing, see where you can make cutbacks, and see where you can make changes that last. Setting boundaries, respecting yourself, and even being more resilient is important for you and for your role.
Eat Healthily Where You Can
When you are at work, you can sometimes run out of time to eat as healthily as you can. When you are rushing around or working to strict deadlines, you can find that healthy eating can get thrown out of the window. Healthy eating at work can give you the energy that your mind and body need. If you are simply stocking up on sugary food or on junk/convenience foods then you will find that the effects will quickly wear off, and you will be left feeling deflated and short of energy. Eating a more healthy and balanced diet will give you the nutrition and sustenance you need for each day at work. If you are struggling to find healthy options within your place of work, then why not take in your food. You spend a lot of time at your workplace, and you want to be sure that healthy habits extend from your home to your place of work.
