When it comes to choosing a SIM Only mobile plans, there are two popular options to choose from. But what are these options? And which one is right for you? Well we’ve done the homework for you! Here we discuss the two main types of SIM Only plans and the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision the next time you need to set yourself up for calls, texts and data.

    Month-to-Month Plan (Postpaid)

    What is it?

A month-to-month plan is just that – you’re automatically billed at the end of each month (after you’ve used the services) and can cancel at any time. These types of plan SIM Only plans (aka BYO mobile plans) usually have no contracts or commitments, so it’s a great option if you’re not sure how long you’ll need service for or want the flexibility to switch providers easily.

    Pros:

    • No contractual commitments
    • Can change network providers easily
    • Can exceed your plan’s data limit at anytime if you need to
    • Often offers better value than pre-paid plans

    Cons

    • You can end up paying more if you go over your data limit
    • Slightly more difficult to cancel than prepaid plans

    Prepaid

    What is it?

A prepaid plan is where you purchase a certain amount of credit upfront and that credit is used to pay for calls, texts and data. Once the credit runs out, you need to top-up (‘recharge’) again before you can use these services. There are no contracts or commitments with prepaid plans, so they’re great if you want more flexibility.

    Pros:

    • You won’t be caught off-guard with any additional charges for going over your service limit (because you can’t go over without topping up first)
    • Can change network providers easily
    • Data rollover is available – transfer the unused data from one month into your new data allowance for the following month

    Cons:

    • If you run out of credit, you might not be able to make calls or texts or use mobile data when you really need to
    • You may end up paying more than postpaid plans overall, since you could potentially ‘recharge’ more than once a month leading to greater costs

    The Bottom Line

So, which type of SIM Only plan is right for you? Are you someone who doesn’t use their phone all that much? Then a cheap prepaid plan might be the way to go. Do you want the peace of mind knowing that you’ll always be able to use your phone services (even if you’re charged extra at the end of the month), then a postpaid plan might fit the bill. In the end, it’s all about personal preference.
