Leaks are a common occurrence in homes. Loose or damaged pipes, an unruly washing machine, a loose-fitting on a water hose, and even a malfunctioning refrigerator can leave areas of your home soaked.

Many leaks go unnoticed as they are not within the homeowner’s normal range of vision. Unfortunately, this can lead to several issues, including rotten flooring and mold or mildew growth, which can start in as little as 24 to 48 hours. It’s imperative to address the issue as soon as possible, and this starts by recognizing the signs.

    Signs of a Water Leak

There are several signs that can point to a leak, including those listed below:

    • Reduction of water pressure
    • Stains on your ceiling
    • Increase in your water bill
    • Blistering or bubbles in your paint or wallpaper
    • Change in the color of your water
    • Mold or mildew
    • Unexplained puddles of liquid
    • Odd sounds from your plumbing, such as bubbling or hissing

What to Do If You Notice Signs of a Leak

If your water is leaking, it’s important to shut it off to prevent further damage. At times, this can happen at the source of the leak. Other times, you might need to shut off the main water source.

Next, you’ll need to call a plumber as soon as you can. Many plumbers offer after-hours services, so you can still reach someone in the middle of the night. However, expect to pay extra for emergency services. Whenever possible, wait until regular business hours.

If you have homeowner’s insurance, you’ll also need to contact them to make a claim for any damage. Be sure you read your policy, though, as some leaks may not be covered. For example, most insurers do not cover leaks that are caused by old, unmaintained pipes. However, if your insurance does cover the leak, it can save you a great deal of money, so it’s always best to check your coverage.

After the leak has been addressed, you’ll need to address the water damage before it worsens. While you can do this on your own, the safest and most effective way is usually to call in a water damage restoration specialist.

They have the tools necessary to locate moisture in areas unseen by the naked eye. They are also able to effectively manage any dangerous elements, such as mold and mildew, to keep your family out of harm’s way. These specialists can also inform you of any additional steps you need to take.
